Decal printing
How decal printing works for Serbia corporate merch — on ceramics and glass, full-colour photographic reproduction and complex artwork.
What decal printing is and how it works
Decal printing (also called ceramic decal or glass decal) is a decoration method that prints the artwork onto a special decal paper using ceramic or glass inks, then transfers the decal to the substrate and fires it in a kiln to fuse the ink permanently with the ceramic or glass surface.
The process produces a decoration that is part of the substrate — the ink is fused into the glaze at temperatures of 600–850°C, leaving a permanent, dishwasher-safe, full-colour decoration. Decal printing is the standard method for photographic reproduction on ceramic mugs, glass drinkware and ceramic ornaments.
Decal printing is distinct from sublimation (which requires a polyester coating and uses heat-press rather than kiln firing) and from silkscreen (which uses screens and produces a less photographic finish).
When decal printing is the right choice
Decal printing is the right method for ceramic mugs, ceramic beer mugs, glass wine glasses, decorative ceramic items, ceramic ornaments, and select glassware. It is the standard method for full-colour photographic content on ceramic and glass.
For buyers who need a dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe, full-colour decoration on ceramic or glass, decal printing is the right method. The decoration is permanent and will not degrade with washing or use.
For complex multi-colour artwork, photographic content, and full-bleed wraparound prints on drinkware, decal printing is the standard method.
When decal printing is not the right choice
Decal printing is not the right method for small-batch runs (below 50 pieces) — the decal production setup and the kiln firing make the per-piece cost prohibitive at very small volumes. For small batches, silkscreen or sublimation is the right method.
Decal printing is not the right method for buyers who need a fast turnaround — the kiln firing cycle adds 1–3 days to the lead time beyond the decoration production time. For fast turnaround, silkscreen or sublimation is the right method.
Decal printing is not the right method for substrates that cannot withstand kiln temperatures — most plastics, all wood, and most metals cannot be kiln-fired. For these substrates, UV printing, pad printing or silkscreen is the right method.
Per-piece economics
The per-piece decal printing cost in Serbia depends on the substrate and the print area. Practical ranges:
- Decal on ceramic mug (100 pieces): 400–650 RSD per piece.
- Decal on ceramic beer mug (100 pieces): 500–800 RSD per piece.
- Decal on glass wine glass (100 pieces): 350–550 RSD per piece.
- Decal on ceramic ornament (100 pieces): 300–500 RSD per piece.
The decal artwork preparation and screen setup is priced per design (typically 2,500–5,000 RSD per design for the screen and colour separation) and is a one-off per design.
Lead times and production capacity
Decal printing production in Serbia runs through the decal-equipped decoration partners. Standard lead time for a 100–500 piece decal run is 7–14 business days from artwork sign-off, dominated by the kiln firing cycle and the decal production.
For smaller runs (50–100 pieces), the lead time is similar — the kiln firing cycle is the dominant factor regardless of batch size.
Production capacity for decal printing is comfortable at most times of year. The equipment is specialised and the partner network is smaller than for silkscreen or DTF, but well-developed for the demand.
