Sublimation vs DTF: Cyprus printing comparison
Side-by-side comparison of sublimation and DTF printing for branded apparel in Cyprus.
The quick answer
Choose sublimation for full-coverage photo-quality designs on white or light-colour 100% polyester (the all-over-print standard). Choose DTF (Direct-to-Film) for detailed designs on cotton, dark fabrics, or smaller artwork zones where screen print would be expensive.
Side-by-side comparison
| Attribute | Sublimation | DTF |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | White/light polyester, all-over print | Cotton, dark fabrics, small zones |
| Photo quality | Excellent (CMYK) | Excellent (CMYK + white underbase) |
| Hand-feel | Zero (dye sublimates into fabric) | Slight film (printed film adhered) |
| Fabric compatibility | 100% polyester only (light colours) | Cotton, polyester, blends, dark colours |
| Setup cost | Low (digital) | Low (digital) |
| Per-unit cost | 4–8 EUR (full-coverage) | 2–6 EUR (small/medium zone) |
| Durability | Excellent (50+ washes) | Good (40+ washes) |
| Best role | Event t-shirts, full-design promotional apparel | Corporate logo apparel, dark colour apparel |
| Limassol Tech Park default | Event t-shirts | Corporate logo tees (dark colours) |
| Paphos outdoor default | Performance jerseys | Branded tees for staff kit |
When to choose sublimation
The sublimation wins when: the design is full-coverage photo-quality (event t-shirts, all-over-print band merch), the fabric is 100% polyester white/light, the print area is large (entire front, back, sleeves), or the design has gradients and complex colour transitions.
For Limassol Tech Park event t-shirts (Reflect Festival, IFX EXPO), sublimation is the right call.
When to choose DTF
The DTF wins when: the fabric is cotton or poly-blend (most corporate apparel), the colour is dark (navy, black, forest), the design is a single logo or small zone (chest-left, back-yoke), or the design has fine detail with sharp edges (logos, line art).
For Limassol Tech Park and Nicosia firm corporate uniform tees in dark colours, DTF is the right default.
Cost and lead time
Both methods have similar costs (sublimation slightly higher for full-coverage, DTF slightly higher for small zones). Both have similar lead times (10–14 working days for production, plus setup).
Frequently asked questions
Which lasts longer?
Sublimation — the dye becomes part of the fabric and survives 50+ washes without fading. DTF survives 40+ washes; the printed film may eventually peel slightly at high-wear areas.
Can I use sublimation on cotton?
No — sublimation requires 100% polyester. For cotton, use DTF or screen print.
Which is more eco-friendly?
Sublimation, slightly — the dye sublimation process uses less water and no plastisol inks. DTF uses a PET film that needs to be recycled.
Can I print complex gradients?
Both methods support complex gradients. Sublimation is the historical gold standard for photo-quality gradients on polyester.
What's the minimum order quantity?
Both methods work from 50 units. Below 50 units, screen print is more cost-effective for simple logos.
What's the maximum print area?
Sublimation: full garment (front, back, sleeves). DTF: up to A3 size (29.7 × 42 cm) per print zone.
