Doming (resin doming)

How doming works for Serbia corporate merch — on badges, keychains and pins, with a glossy three-dimensional resin finish.

What doming is and how it works

Doming (also called resin doming or polyurethane doming) is a decoration method that applies a clear, glossy polyurethane resin over a printed or printed-and-cut substrate, leaving a three-dimensional domed finish on top of the artwork.

The process prints the artwork onto a vinyl or metal substrate, cuts the substrate to the desired shape, then applies a precisely-metered drop of polyurethane resin over the artwork. The resin self-levels and cures to a clear, glossy, three-dimensional dome that protects the artwork and gives a premium tactile finish.

Doming is the standard method for badges, keychains, pins and lapel pins where the premium glossy finish is a brand statement. The domed surface catches light and shadow in a way that flat prints do not.

When doming is the right choice

Doming is the right method for name badges, keychains, enamel pins, lapel pins, name tags, premium stickers with doming, and select small accessories where the three-dimensional finish adds value.

For badges that will be worn (employee name badges, conference badges), doming protects the printed surface from wear and gives a premium appearance that flat-printed badges lack. The domed finish also makes the badge easier to clean.

For keychains that will be handled daily, doming protects the printed surface from abrasion and gives a tactile quality that flat-printed keychains lack. The domed finish is the standard for premium metal keychains.

When doming is not the right choice

Doming is not the right method for flat, large-area decorations — the resin self-levels to a thin layer on large surfaces and does not produce the same domed effect. For large areas, UV printing or silkscreen is the right method.

Doming is not the right method for substrates that cannot hold the resin — flexible fabrics, textured surfaces, and certain plastics do not accept the resin well. For these, alternative methods are required.

Doming is not the right method for fast turnaround — the resin curing time is 8–24 hours depending on the formulation and the ambient conditions. For fast turnaround, UV printing or silkscreen is the right method.

Per-piece economics

The per-piece doming cost in Serbia depends on the substrate, the size of the domed area and the run size. Practical ranges:

  • Doming on metal badge (50×20 mm, 100 pieces): 200–350 RSD per piece (additional to printing).
  • Doming on metal keychain (40×40 mm, 100 pieces): 250–400 RSD per piece (additional to printing).
  • Doming on enamel pin (30×20 mm, 100 pieces): 150–280 RSD per piece (additional to printing).
  • Doming on sticker (custom shape, 500 pieces): 80–150 RSD per piece.

The resin material is the main expense. The artwork preparation and substrate cutting is priced per design (typically 500–1,500 RSD per design).

Lead times and production capacity

Doming production in Serbia runs through the doming-equipped decoration partners. Standard lead time for a 100–500 piece doming run is 7–10 business days from artwork sign-off, dominated by the resin curing time.

For smaller runs (50–100 pieces), the lead time is similar — the resin curing cycle is the dominant factor regardless of batch size.

Production capacity for doming is comfortable at most times of year. The equipment is specialised and the partner network is smaller than for silkscreen or DTF, but well-developed for the demand.
